Book a session for Remote Online Notarization →How a remote online notarization works
- Request your session. Tell us your document type and preferred time. We confirm and send your secure session link.
- Verify your identity. Show a valid government photo ID on camera, then complete one approved identity-proofing method: knowledge-based authentication questions, biometric identity verification, or a digital certificate.
- Sign on camera. The notary watches you sign, completes the notarization and returns your document electronically.
What a remote online notary in New Jersey can do
New Jersey allows notaries to perform notarizations over audio-video technology. As a remote online notary in New Jersey, the notary must be located in the state during the session. The signer can be anywhere, whether that is Essex County, another state or another country.
Each session follows the state’s safeguards. Your identity is confirmed by a government-issued photo ID shown on camera plus one identity-proofing method approved in the New Jersey Notary Public Manual: dynamic knowledge-based authentication, biometric identity verification, or a digital public key certificate. The session is recorded, and the recording is kept for ten years as New Jersey requires. That record protects you, the notary and anyone who later relies on the document.
Remote notarization works well for affidavits, acknowledgments, powers of attorney, consent forms and many business documents. Some receiving offices, courts and foreign governments have their own rules about electronic notarizations, so confirm with the office receiving your document before you book.
What to have ready
Bring or have on hand a current, unexpired government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license or passport. Keep the document unsigned until the notary is present. Every person who needs to sign must attend the session.
For a remote session, use a computer or phone with a working camera, microphone and a stable internet connection, in a quiet, well-lit space. If your document requires witnesses, let us know in advance so the session can be arranged correctly.
Remote online notary New Jersey: frequently asked questions
Is remote online notarization legal in New Jersey?
Yes. New Jersey law permits commissioned notaries to perform remote notarizations using approved audio-video technology, identity verification and recording. Read the New Jersey Notary Public Law (opens in a new tab) from the NJ Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services.
Can I use a New Jersey remote online notary if I live in another state?
Yes. The notary must be located in New Jersey, but the signer can be located anywhere. Check that the office receiving your document accepts electronic notarizations.
How much does notarization cost?
A remote online notarization is $25 per notarial act, which includes one notary seal and no added service fee. Each additional notary seal is $8, so a session with two seals totals $33. Additional signers or witnesses add to the total. You will see the full price before you book.
Can the notary help me choose or fill out a legal form?
No. A notary who is not an attorney cannot give legal advice, choose forms for you or explain the legal effect of a document. Please speak with an attorney for those questions.
Do you issue apostilles?
No. Apostilles are issued by the New Jersey Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services. We do not prepare documents or handle apostille submissions. If your document must be notarized before you submit it to the state, you can book a notarization with us.
